The Song is Over

This is a story I've been working on since the summer of 2020. It's now in the tenth draft as the main characters have evolved and the details refined.

Becca and I are walking up Westminster when she spots a lime green guitar in the window of a used instrument shop. A Fender Jazzmaster: the body is scratched across the top and the frets are worn down from heavy use, but someone has upgraded the tuning pegs and pickguard, replacing the chrome with brass. There is no question that it’s mine. I painted it that color myself. I don’t know why. I was happy with black. Ellie suggested lime, so I did it. It seems like that’s how I made a lot of decisions in those days.

We both notice the other noticing. It’s just a guitar, but it’s like seeing someone from the past, a previous life. Someone you loved, someone who’s now a stranger.
